Art/Play Therapy
Art/Play Therapy
Art therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses the arts, the creative process and speech to allow individuals to express what they think and feel in order to explore identified difficulties.
Children find the visual arts to be a familiar and comfortable communication tool. There is no need to be an artist. The art therapist will guide your child in the use of creative materials used in painting, drawing, collage-making or sculptures.
In accordance with set objectives, the art-therapeutic approach can be directive where the child explores certain proposed themes or non-directive where the child explores his own ideas. The art therapist will ask questions that serve to provoke reflections and insight.
Art therapy can be effective in dealing with all kinds of problems, including:
- Anxiety
- Bullying
- Emotional regulation
- Relationship and interpersonal problems
- Familial separation and divorce
- Loss and bereavement.
Art therapy is also highly effective with families and groups. In this case, the art therapist will make use of an appropriate theme around which to channel creative expressions, followed by the sharing of each person’s creative experience. This has been found to be very effective in enhancing listening skills, self-expression and relationship building.
The benefits of art therapy can be diverse for both adults and children and include:
- increased self-awareness and self-knowledge
- Increased assertiveness
- More effective ways of reacting and interacting
- More effective strategies to manage specific stressful situations.
Helping you and your child starts with our complimentary consultation with our early childhood development specialist in order to determine whether your child can benefit from art or any other therapy. A more comprehensive evaluation may be recommended.
